Crash Course in Podficcing
Hello! I’m so glad you’re considering the HP Podfic Mini Fest. This is both an attempt to provide a really quick crash course in case you’ve never recorded audio before, and a next step if you’re familiar with the Drarry Fans Discord Server Babble Challenge introduction. (If the structure of this sounds familiar, that’s why.)
This guide is meant to help people starting out with podficcing and is not intended to be patronizing towards podficcers who are already comfortable with their process.
If you have any edits or suggestions, please leave a comment! Anonymous comments are enabled, but please note that you won’t get a notification when we reply. If you need help with a specific question however, please see the how to find help section below instead.
• If you are okay with likely having to contact the writer directly for permission, you can find a fic wherever you like to read fanfiction.
• Otherwise, you might like to start with step two.
Things to consider when finding a fic:
• Length: it’s often more reasonable to start with a shorter fic, which means a shorter recording time and less (or even no) editing.
• Rating: you might find that things you can happily read are things you’re not so comfortable narrating. Starting with lower-rated fic, or practising by reading passages out loud to yourself to gauge your comfort level might be helpful!
The Fandom Permission Statements (FPS list) website has an index of fanworks creators with blanket permission, and is specifically oriented towards podficcing. You can browse the Harry Potter creators on the Harry Potter fandom list at https://fpslist.org/fandom-info/?fidfk=5660. There are currently over 2700 entries!
• Follow the link to the statement to read the creator’s statement and find their fanworks.
There’s a Podfic Welcome tag on Ao3. You can browse the tag and use the sidebar filters to find fics in the Harry Potter fandom. There are currently 217 posts, though some may include more than one fic. You can also narrow it down to restrict or search for specific tags or keywords.
If you're on a computer, or running Firefox on Android, you can use the Blanket Permission Highlighter, which is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that allows you to browse Ao3 and be able to see which creators have statements that are entered in the Fandom Permission Statements database. There’s also an option to see only fanworks from listed creators (the checkbox is in the filters sidebar). Here are the installation instructions on GitHub:https://github.com/BrickGrass/Blanket-Permission-Highlighter#installation
Even if a creator is in the Fandom Permission Statements directory, or used the Podfic Welcome tag, check their profile to read their statement. Some creators have notes, such as holding a couple of fics that they don’t want podficced, or have preferences about getting notified after a podfic is posted, etc. They might also have helpful tips like how to pronounce their pseudonym!
If the fic you’d like to podfic isn’t tagged Podfic Welcome or the creator isn’t in the database, it’s advisable to check the creator’s Ao3 profile anyway. They might have an Ask First Statement (namely, they like podfics but prefer to be asked first) or some other notes, or might even say that they aren’t comfortable with having their fanworks podficced, which saves trying to contact them. Profiles also often have social media or email linked, where the creator might prefer to be contacted. You can also check the author note or endnote of a fic for social media links. If the creator doesn’t mention a preferred method of contact, it’s up to you and your comfort level whether you prefer to contact the creator directly on social media, leave a comment on the fic, or pick a different fic to podfic.
• You can get really complicated with this, but for the purposes of this crash course, I’ll keep it very, very simple.
• Depending on how long the fanfic is, you might be able to read it in one sitting without editing. Some podficcers also prefer not to edit out small slip-ups; that’s totally up to you!
On a phone:
• There’s nothing wrong with recording on a phone. In fact, if you’re in a noisy environment, a phone will do a better job of avoiding background noise because it’s designed to be less sensitive.
• Use your built-in phone recording app to record.
• On iOS it’s Voice Memos. Here’s a quick guide: https://www.imore.com/voice-memos. The guide doesn’t mention it, but if you edit a recording, you can use the red "replace" button to record over a section of your audio that you want to replace, as well as keep recording longer than the original audio. This style of editing is called punch and roll.
• On Android, it seems to depend on your phone. A Samsung has Voice Recorder, which works very similarly to the Voice Memos, and other Android phones will have something comparable, or you can search for one in the app store.
• You can use your built-in phone mic, or the mic included with your phone headphones.
• Do a sample test first to make sure you are happy with the positioning of the mic.
• Share the recording to whatever local storage you have, or whatever cloud storage you use, and transfer it to your computer if you want to edit it (see below).
• If you would also like to edit on your phone, here's an excellent guide (for iOS): Podficcing From Your iPhone by twtd. (If you have suggestions for editing on Android, please comment!
On a computer:
• The most basic free software that many people use is Audacity, which works for Windows, Mac and Linux. Download: https://www.audacityteam.org/
• Once you’ve installed the program, use your built-in computer microphone or any plug-in microphone to record.
• Do a sample test first to make sure that you like the volume and your computer is picking up the correct microphone. (Plug it in before you start Audacity.)
• You can use Audacity to edit the recording if you like, or also edit a recording you did on your phone.
• Here’s a quick video guide on recording and editing with Audacity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzJ2VyYkmaA
• Remember to read the header first, before you read the fic (or edit it in first later). The header can be whatever you like, but people usually at least include the title, author name and reader name. Many people also read "the end" at the end.
Sound quality:
• Recording in a quiet room with lots of fabrics/carpet will improve the sound by reducing the echoing effect (sound bouncing off the walls)
Some people record in a blanket cave or closet (with lots of clothing), or pad their space with pillows.
• Try not to move or touch the microphone. If you’re using your phone, that means the phone and case.
• Try not to be too close or far from the mic. You can test this by recording a little and playing it back. Some people say 30 cm, some say a couple of handspans. It varies. (A headset mic should be closer.)
• Avoid recording in a room with a fan, air conditioner, refrigerator, etc.
• If you can’t control a loud background noise, and you’re also okay with reading in public, leaving in "outdoor" background noise can be less distracting than the sound of loud humming.
Even if you can’t control some of these things, whatever you can do will help!
Format:
• There are a variety of different audio formats, but generally speaking, providing an MP3 file should work for most people. (Providing a streaming option is part of posting; see step five.) Your audio editor should be able to save to MP3, or you can do an internet search for "convert to mp3" (though this will work better if your podfic isn’t very long). If you’re using Auphonic, you can also pick your export format there.
Metadata:
• Metadata is the information that displays on your phone or audio player when you play a file. Editing your Metadata is optional, but you should at least make sure that it doesn’t include your wallet name. You can check this by right-clicking the file and checking the file properties, or the equivalent on MacOS or Linux.
• If you’d like to edit your metadata, or need to edit it, there are a few different options. If you used Audacity to edit your audio, you should be able to set your metadata there. Here’s the page in the online manual: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/metadata_editor.html.
• You can also set your metadata if you’re using Auphonic.
• A lot of people also use Mp3tag. You can download it here: https://www.mp3tag.de/en/
• Everyone has different preferences for metadata, but some of the common ones are:
Cover:
• Covers are 100% optional. There are a lot of barriers to entry for podficcing, and having to be a graphic designer shouldn’t be one of them! If you would like to read a great meta post about this, please check out Thoughts on Podfic Cover Art and the Unnecessary Barriers to Podficcing by ItsADrizzit
• If you would like to make a cover, you can do that with any image editor or design program that you already use. If you haven’t used any before, Canva is a free online and app design program that’s pretty user friendly. If you haven’t used it before, you might like to start with their podcast cover templates.
• People usually put the title of the fanfic, the writer name, and the podficcer name on the cover. After that, they might add the rating (here are some really cute rating stickers), the rating, the fandom, the relationship/characters, and/or any warnings, but these all really vary.
• You also don’t need to include the cover in the MP3 metadata (so that it will show on your audio player) but if you would like to, you can do that with Auphonic, and I think Mp3tag as well.
Submission:
• There’s a collection to post to for the HP Podfic Mini Fest, as well as an option to be tagged on Tumblr when your podfic is revealed. You can find out more about this in the Ao3 collection rules and f.a.q. In summary, in the video posting tutorial, instead of clicking Post > New Work on ao3, use the Post to Collection link from the HP Podfic Mini Fest instead: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/hp_podfic_mini_fest_2025/works/new
Posting:
• Important note: always click preview at least once when posting a podfic, so that the writer gets a related work request from Ao3. It’s a known issue that if you don’t click preview, the writer won’t get the notification email.
• You can post on your phone, but it’s easier to post from a computer.
• It's courteous to provide both a streaming and download option, since listeners all have different access needs. (For instance, some people might not be able to stream, while others might not be able to download.) The Audiofic Archive is an excellent option. Minnabird's tutorial using Archive.org hosting provides both access methods, but other options would be to use Soundcloud and enable the download option, or use a hosting service that allows for streaming from a browser (like Google Drive or Dropbox), etc. Definitely check out the A Breakdown of Podfic Hosting Options (also linked in the guides section below).
• Minnabird on Ao3 put together a fabulous video tutorial that walks you through all the steps of posting a podfic to Ao3, including hosting and podfic skins. https://youtu.be/R_NeuJNMhoM
• Some of the places mentioned are:
Archive.org (also known as the Internet Archive) to upload files (the audio and the cover if you made one). If you don’t have an account, you can sign up at https://archive.org/account/signup. Make sure you use a fannish or at least non-wallet name email address when you create your account, since the email address will appear in the post’s xml file. It’s quite buried, but it’s better to be safe. If you would like an in-depth guide to archive.org, you can check out Justaphage’s archive.org-hosting guide.
• Azdaema’s podfic skin which is linked from chapter 19 of A Newbie's Guide to Podficcing. A direct link to the code shown in the video (skin.css) is https://github.com/Azdaema/AO3-Skin_Podfic/blob/master/version%201/standard/skin.css. The direct link to create a work skin is https://archiveofourown.org/skins/new?skin_type=WorkSkin and you can see your work skins at archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR-USER-NAME/skins?skin_type=WorkSkin
• This was created after the video tutorial, so it’s not in the video, but there’s a fabulous Ao3 Podfic Posting Helper Firefox add-on or Chrome extension extension which is so incredibly helpful. When you’re on the posting page, just click the add-on/extension in your menu bar and paste in the ao3 URL of the original fic. The extension will fill out the ao3 metadata for you, including tags, and example HTML which is compatible with Azdaema’s workskin, so you can just add extra tags or notes if you like, and paste in your links. You can also use Azdaema’s sample HTML, like in the video.
• The Audiofic Archive is an excellent, entirely fannish podfic host. You can find more information on their creating & submitting podfic and streaming and embedding pages. Their submission form does ask for things like a link to where the podfic will be posted (usually, especially in this case, on Ao3), so you might want to draft a post first before submitting your podfic to the Audiofic Archive.
Other notes:
• Use the "inspired by" section when posting to ao3 to link to the fanfic where it’s posted. If it’s on ao3 you’ll just need to use the link. If it’s on Tumblr or somewhere else, include the link and fill out the rest of the prompted information. (The posting helper add-on/extension won’t work in this case.)
• Different podficcers have different preferences for titling, but some common ones are:
